Experimental Infill
Instructor: Joshua Thornton
Fees: $350
Fees include lunch for participants on workshop days and camping accommodations.
This workshop will continue the exploration of the versatility aggregate/clay binder combinations. Taking the straw/clay workshops will teach you a tried and true production technique utilizing a shuttered formwork system.
This workshop will focus on lath cages, a complimentary technique for aggregate/clay binder infill systems. The lath (similar in principle to the lath and gypsum plaster technique used in century homes) is a formwork of sorts which remains in situ and is plastered over. This forming technique dramatically increases the range of aggregate possibilities, which in turn enhances the natural builder’s ability to adapt to locally available materials where straw is not abundant.
As with the other infill courses, you will learn the building science behind vapour permeable flow through (“breathable”) wall systems. You will learn the techniques of fabrication, as well as variations which will further enhance your adaptability - a key asset for a natural builder.
